Signature Kalo: The Print That Started It All

Signature Kalo is one of our first real attempts at graphic design—after our Shave Ice and Shaka days—back when we were still figuring out what we wanted The Keiki Dept to stand for.

Some prints are cute. Some are trendy. This one became ours.

How this print became our signature

Around the time this print took shape, a lot was changing for our ʻohana.

We were:

  • Going full-time with the business
  • Making the decision to send our keiki to Hawaiian immersion school
  • Looking for ways to reconnect with our Hawaiian ancestry in a real, everyday way

In that season, kalo was the plant that made everything make sense for us.

Why kalo mattered to us (and still does)

Kalo became more than inspiration for a design. It became a reminder—of growth, of responsibility, and of what we wanted to build:

  • A business that reflects who we are
  • Products that carry meaning (not just “stuff”)
  • A way to keep culture present in the everyday moments of raising keiki

As our family grew, as our work grew, and as we kept learning, this print stayed with us.

A print that grew into our shop identity

Over the years, Signature Kalo has become part of our shop identity—our signature green kalo print.

We’ve adjusted the scale of the design for different products, but the heart of it hasn’t changed: it’s a print that feels like home.
